Get in touchOverview
A crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged tooth, restoring its shape, size, and strength. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth to the adjacent natural teeth or implants. Both are fabricated from ceramic, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or zirconia — matched to your existing dentition.
Good candidates
- Teeth with large fillings that need structural reinforcement
- Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment
- Cracked, fractured, or significantly worn teeth
- One to three adjacent missing teeth (bridges)
Not recommended for
- Minor cosmetic issues better addressed with bonding or veneers
- Heavily compromised teeth that may require extraction and implant
- Patients with active, untreated periodontal disease
- Patients with severe bruxism without a nightguard
Process
What to expect.
01
Tooth preparation
The tooth is shaped to accommodate the crown. Impressions or digital scans are taken. A temporary crown is placed.
02
Fabrication
Your crown or bridge is fabricated in a dental laboratory over two to three weeks. Same-day CEREC crowns are milled in-office.
03
Try-in and adjustment
The restoration is tried in your mouth. Contacts, contour, and color are adjusted. You approve the fit before cementation.
04
Cementation
The temporary is removed and the permanent crown or bridge is cemented into place with a high-strength dental adhesive.
Recovery & longevity
Recovery
Mild sensitivity to temperature for a few days. Adjust your chewing pattern on the crowned tooth for the first 24 hours. Full bite accommodation within one week.
How long it lasts
10 to 15 years for crowns, 8 to 12 years for bridges, with proper oral hygiene and regular checkups.
FAQ
Common questions.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is numbed with local anesthesia before preparation. Most patients report no pain during or after the procedure. Mild sensitivity resolves within days.
Is a bridge better than an implant?
Bridges are faster (weeks vs. months) and do not require surgery. However, they require altering adjacent healthy teeth. Implants are a more independent solution but take longer and cost more.
What material is best?
For visible teeth, all-ceramic or zirconia provides the best aesthetics. For molars, porcelain-fused-to-metal or monolithic zirconia offers greater strength. Your dentist will recommend based on the tooth's location and function.
Can a crown be replaced?
Yes. Crowns wear and may need replacement after 10 to 15 years. The underlying tooth can usually be re-prepared and a new crown fabricated.
