Get in touchOverview
A dental implant is a titanium post that replaces the root of a missing tooth. A crown, bridge, or denture is attached to it. Unlike bridges, implants do not require altering adjacent teeth. Unlike dentures, they do not shift or slip.
Good candidates
- Patients missing one or more permanent teeth
- Patients with failing bridges or partial dentures
- Good candidates for single-stage or staged implant placement
- Patients with adequate bone density (or candidates for bone grafting)
Not recommended for
- Active uncontrolled diabetes or autoimmune conditions
- Heavy smokers (significantly reduced success rate)
- Patients currently undergoing radiation therapy to the jaw
- Pregnancy
- Patients with untreated periodontal disease
Process
What to expect.
01
Consultation and imaging
CBCT scan to evaluate bone density and nerve positioning. Your dentist determines whether bone grafting is needed before implant placement.
02
Implant placement
The titanium post is surgically placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia. The site is then left to heal for three to six months.
03
Osseointegration
Bone grows around the implant surface over several months, locking it in place. A temporary crown or bridge may be worn during this period.
04
Abutment and crown
Once integration is confirmed, an abutment is attached to the implant and a custom crown is cemented on top.
Recovery & longevity
Recovery
Mild swelling and discomfort for three to five days after placement. Soft foods are recommended for the first week. Full healing before crown placement takes three to six months.
How long it lasts
20 years or longer with proper oral hygiene and regular checkups. Implants are the longest-lasting tooth replacement option available.
FAQ
Common questions.
Does getting an implant hurt?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. Most patients report less discomfort than a tooth extraction. Post-operative soreness is managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
How long do implants last?
With proper care, implants can last 20 to 30 years or longer. The crown may need replacement after 10 to 15 years of normal wear.
Am I too old for implants?
Age alone is not a deciding factor. As long as you have adequate bone density and are in good general health, implants can be placed at any age.
What is the success rate?
Over 95 percent for healthy patients. The rate drops to approximately 85 percent for smokers. Proper home care and regular maintenance visits are the strongest predictors of long-term success.
Can I get implants if I have bone loss?
Often yes. Bone grafting, sinus lifts, or ridge augmentation can build up the bone needed to support an implant. This adds time to the process but makes implants possible for most patients.
How do I care for implants?
Brush and floss normally. Your dentist may recommend a water flosser for hard-to-reach areas around the implant. Regular six-month checkups allow your dentist to monitor the implant and surrounding tissue.
